Seafoam Walls - XVi (2021) [Hi-Res]

The Miami quartet Seafoam Walls, who describe their sound as "Caribbean Jazzgaze," has released the album "XVi." Their music is a unique blend of jazz, shoegaze, hip-hop, and dub, infused with a distinct chillwave shimmer. The album "XVi" features angelic vocals, skewed fuzzbox guitar, and the spirit of Toro y Moi, yet Seafoam Walls tend to twist their songs into more progressive or fusion forms. Compositions can unpredictably evolve from cheery pop into half-tempo electronics or experimental noodling, with chaotic vocal transitions from harmonized cooing to robotic grumbling. This ambitious and complex sound is partly explained by singer/songwriter and lead guitarist Jayan Bertrand being an initial metalhead, which translates into the scope for bombast and world-building, likened to a mix of Steely Dan, Weather Report, and Dream Theater, remixed by Washed Out.
