Copenhagen- and Berlin-based composer and multitalented vocalist Zola Mennenoh has released her quietly passionate new album, "A Labour of Love."
The work explores the combination of "radical vulnerability" and "radical strength." Mennenoh asks, "How do I stand up for my beliefs without fighting with a strong, loud voice?" She explains, "I wanted to be soft enough to speak my truth, yet allow myself to express anger and confront the chaotic side of breaking free from convention."
These themes are expressed elegantly and artistically throughout the album. Combining baroque pop, spoken word, and sound design, the album features elegant, whispered, and subtly experimental ballads. The blend of fragility and power, organic and digital elements, and formal and freeform compositions creates a sound like, in Mennenoh's own words, "an iceberg carved from silk."
