Review by Scott Yanow

A superior sampler LP of Louis Armstrong as a rapidly emerging young cornetist, it features him on two sides apiece with Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra, Perry Bradford's Jazz Phools (his playing on "I Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle" almost overwhelms the recording equipment), Erskine Tate's Vendome Orchestra and Lil's Hot Shots (actually The Hot Five titles but cut for another label) and four songs apiece with Jimmy Bertrand's Washboard Wizards and Johnny Dodds's Black Bottom Stompers. The supporting cast is strong but Armstrong sounds a decade ahead of everyone else.
