Angel Sessions - Love Ride (1999)

In 1999, Fantasy decided to refresh the Volt label's catalog by signing R&B acts, including the young Angel Sessions, whose debut album Love Ride reflects the sound of late-1990s urban contemporary music. The album, produced by F.L. Pittman and arranged by figures like Preston Glass, is competent but unremarkable. Sessions, with her MTV/BET-friendly image, shows versatility: her vocal delivery on ballads such as "My Love's for You" and "Say That You Love Me" is reminiscent of Deniece Williams, while the fewer funkier, hip-hop-influenced tracks lean toward a Destiny's Child-meets-Janet Jackson approach. Volt's shift toward modern R&B and a younger demographic, away from its classic 1960s and 1970s soul roots, might be debatable for some fans. However, Sessions possesses the vocal chops, charisma, and talent to justify the effort, making Love Ride a likable and viable album overall.
