Produced by Roger Corman, these films are historically significant for marking Jack Nicholson's screen debut and Charles Bronson's first leading role. The scores are performed by jazz ensembles, utilizing dynamic rhythms to enhance action sequences and sensual melodies to underscore the drama.

Gerald Fried (1928–2023), a Juilliard graduate, launched his career through his friendship with Stanley Kubrick, scoring the director's early works such as The Killing and Paths of Glory.
