Best of Ranil y Su Conjunto Tropical (2025) is a retrospective compilation that transports the listener back to the golden age of 1970s Peruvian cumbia. The album gathers iconic instrumental and vocal compositions by the legendary Raúl Llerena Vásquez (Ranil) and his ensemble from the city of Iquitos. Ranil's music is distinct from that of his capital-city counterparts (such as Los Destellos) due to its "raw," hypnotic sound, dominated by surf guitars and tropical jungle rhythms blended with elements of Brazilian carimbó and psychedelic rock. Released under the aegis of his own label, Llerena Producciones, this release serves as documentary proof of the unique cultural phenomenon of "Amazonian cumbia," born in the isolation of the tropical rainforests.
