Pianist John Coates is best known outside of the Delaware Water Gap (where he resides) for his many Omnisound recordings of the 1970s and early '80s. He returned to record in the mid-'90s on the tiny Pacific St. label, and his style had not changed much through the years. He was still influenced by Bill Evans' chord voicings (particularly on ballads), swung gently, and came up with his own approach to relaxed standards (including on this CD "Freddie Freeloader" and "After You've Gone"), as well as his thought-provoking originals. Coates is assisted by bassist Paul Langosch and drummer Mike Smith for a lightly swinging and subtle set.
