Light Finds a Way In also takes its name from a Mieko Kawakami story, ‘Wisteria’. There’s a moment where the narrator lies in a darkened room and gradually begins to perceive the world around them -
“I enter the darkness and sit in the living room, or in the centre of the room if it’s a studio. Then I lie down and open and close my eyes slowly. The eyes adjust after a while, and you start to see all kinds of things. Light finds its way in even at night, no matter how small the window may be.”
I love the quiet power this phrase gives to both nature and the individual. There's something deeply reassuring in the idea that light persists in finding its way in, even through the tiniest openings. It reveals a resilience, a presence of hope, and the beauty that can emerge from simply being open and attentive.
This idea resonates with my approach to making music as well. I aim to create musical spaces that are responsive to the musicians within them — where we listen deeply, adjust, and allow moments of light to emerge organically. Like the narrator in Wisteria, we sit in the room, become aware, and trust that something meaningful will find its way in.
