This album serves as the official soundtrack to the documentary film "Playing For Change: A Cinematic Discovery of Street Musicians". The film was directed by Mark Johnson and Jonathan Walls.

Unlike the franchise's later studio projects, the 2005 release documents the movement's early stages. The material was recorded using a mobile recording studio that traveled across the streets of the USA (from New York to New Orleans and Santa Monica). The compilation features live performances by street musicians playing blues, folk, and gospel in their natural urban environments. The album captures the atmosphere of spontaneous creativity and demonstrates that music has the power to unite people regardless of their background.
