Mariano Otero - Danza (2018) [Hi-Res]

Danza (2018) marks the return of renowned Argentine bassist and composer Mariano Otero to large-scale instrumental music following his exploration of the vocal genre. For this release, Otero assembled a unique octet featuring an expanded brass section (three trumpets, trombone, tenor and alto saxophones), guitar, and drums. Unlike his previous work with a traditional big band format, the sound here is more compact yet rich, emphasizing complex counterpoints and melodic clarity.

The album's material balances between contemporary jazz, funk groove, and orchestral chamber music. The compositions are notably concise (most tracks are under 5 minutes), distinguishing them from extended jazz jams, and are structured more like songs without words. The tracklist includes a piece titled "Radiohead," a tribute to the British band that highlights rock influences on the composer's work. Otero plays bass guitar on all tracks, serving as the foundation of the rhythm section.
