This release is the original motion picture soundtrack for the cult British crime drama Performance, released in 1970. The film was directed by Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg, starring James Fox and Mick Jagger.

The musical score was largely produced and composed by Jack Nitzsche. The album features an eclectic mix of genres that reflects the film's hallucinogenic and tense atmosphere. It includes contributions from prominent musicians of the era: Randy Newman (performing the opening track "Gone Dead Train"), slide guitar virtuoso Ry Cooder, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and The Last Poets, whose work is considered a precursor to hip-hop. The centerpiece of the album is Mick Jagger's solo performance "Memo From Turner," which has become a rock classic. The sound ranges from hard-hitting blues-rock to avant-garde experiments with the Moog synthesizer.
