The album "Hal Cannon" (2011) marks the solo debut of renowned American folklorist and musician Hal Cannon as a singer-songwriter of original material. After decades of researching and performing traditional music with the Deseret String Band, Cannon turned to crafting his own songs, which he describes as "place-based music."

The record's sound is deeply immersed in the atmosphere of the American West, blending elements of folk, country, and cowboy poetry. Thematically, the songs range from introspective reflections ("Soldier's Heart," which touches on PTSD) to sketches of desert life ("Desert Home").
