Various Artists - What You Have Come for Is Death: A Soundtrack for The Animals, A Novel by Christian Kiefer (2015)

Christian Kiefer, working as both a musician and a novelist, has bridged these disciplines with the release of the soundtrack album What You Have Come for Is Death for his new novel, The Animals. The book narrates the story of a man with a criminal past attempting to build a new life in rural Idaho. The album was produced remotely; following the completion of the manuscript, Kiefer created a visual "score" comprised of images and texts, which was distributed to collaborators via cloud services.

The recording features contributions from Kiefer's long-time collaborators, such as Jefferson Pitcher, as well as new personnel, including members of the Boxhead Ensemble. The resulting work is a textured sonic experience ranging from dense drone to country-tinged melodies. The compositions are thematically divided to reflect the novel's contrasting settings of Idaho and Nevada, intended to be experienced either in conjunction with the text or as a standalone work.
