This is one of Ismael Quintana's most enjoyable recordings. Although its promotion was very poor (the salsa of the late '70s was beginning to decline in audience and, thus, sales), Quintana manages to shine in the album's assorted genres and styles: New York-style salsa, son montuno, bolero, and even merengue, which was gaining larger public attention. "Mientes" (written by the singer) and "Pierdes" were the better promoted tunes, where he truly gives his all. "No Es Preciso" is a heartfelt moment (arranged by Jorge Millet) that should be entitled to better appreciation. As usual, the Fania music machine knows how to craft a slick, highly professional product. Sadly, the solo recording career of this artist would begin to wane, but his legacy has left an endurable mark that should neither be ignored nor pidgeonholed in a specific era. A must for salsa aficionados.~José A. Estévez Jr.
