Luis Fernandes, Pierce Warnecke - Culatra (2026) [Hi-Res]

In 2021, Luis Fernandes and Pierce Warnecke undertook an artistic residency on the Portuguese island of Culatra, resulting in the sonic project "The Island." The compositions are primarily based on field recordings of the natural environment and local fishing activities, augmented by modular oscillators and recordings of boat engines. Through extreme audio processing, the artists extracted inherent rhythms and harmonies embedded within the source material. The central compositional concept utilizes the horizon line as a spatial axis: sounds are distributed vertically (above, below, or along the horizon) and panned to simulate a 360-degree auditory perspective. The project seeks to translate the visual geometry of the landscape and the island's physical contrasts into abstract sonic forms.
