“He’s seen some shit, hey?” It’s a question I was asked when introducing a loved one to Jake’s music. I sometimes feel like I’m holding a compass that usually points to pain. Holding in the way someone with drugs is holding; usually trying to pretend it’s not there. I reckon Jake takes the compass out more often than I. Maybe this lets him feel more in others than I rarely dare. There is a certain sense of calm when quietly immersed in the vulnerability of it all. I know. On paper this sounds like a tough listen. In practice, it’s a guilt free ride…a guitar, a voice and a mouth harp. The simplicity makes the songs feel that much closer to home…like an old friend that’s sleeping on your couch. At this age, you check the mirrors more often and you regret the times that you didn't.
