Pianist Jürg Hanselmann opens up Josef Gabriel Rheinberger's early piano works with a fine sense of sound poetry. The Twelve Character Pieces for the new piano (1864) present the young Liechtenstein composer as a true master of the musical miniature: from the light and dance-like Duettino and the mysterious Notturno to the brilliant Etude and moments of intimate melancholy. The program is complemented by the rarely performed Four Fugues for Piano (1862), which impressively demonstrate Rheinberger's masterful contrapuntal artistry. All works are world premiere recordings. With a wealth of color, clarity and intimate expression, Jürg Hanselmann opens the door to a hitherto little-known piano universe of Rheinberger.
