Since last autumn, Australia’s premiere soulstress – KYLIE AULDIST has been promising us a new album and at last the long player’s arrived and the 10 tracker delivers (mainly) the 80s flavoured electro funk and soul that the pre-release PR promised.

That PR suggested that Ms A was working on a soundscape that owed more than a little to bands like Tears for Fears and Duran Duran, However with a powerhouse vocalist like Kylie at the mic you can be sure that set delievrs something a little more passionate, feisty and, yes, soulful than anything those anodyne outfits ever released!

That’s evident right from the start with the opening track – a big, brash, electro funk workout, ‘One Time Offer’. And if that’s your boat floater, there’s plenty more to keep you afloat. Try ‘Birthday Boy’ (one of the taster singles), ‘Later Tonight’, ’Get in the Game’ (another taster single) and ‘U4Me’. Then there’s ‘GD Goddess’ – another 80s electro funk homage – but maybe the most soulful of the bunch – this wouldn’t have been out of place at any of those long-lost 80s soul weekenders.

If you’re looking for some proper, emotional soul though go straight to the ballad ‘Close To You’. This was another taster single and it’s actually a duet. On the cut Kylie is joined by rising, Ausie soul diva, Thundo. The pair complement each other perfectly on the call and response lines and the beguiling harmonies. It’s the album standout! ‘Dre Dream’ runs it close though. This mid-tempo groove offers a little more respite from the fiercer electro sounds. ‘Wanna Be Where You Are’ is the album’s other ballad – a little unfocused, but, again, more relief from the LP’s overall soundscape.

‘Hybrid’ is Kylie Auldist’s sixth solo album and it’s out now!
