Who doesn't know this amiable master of the light muse? asked a panegyrist in 1925, when the Berlin composer and publisher Siegfried Translateur celebrated his 50th birthday. While this rhetorical question is unlikely to elicit any significant reaction today, after the 150th anniversary of his birth, the audience would have applauded enthusiastically: After all, the native Upper Silesian was generally doing well with his creations, not to mention the fact that the Viennese Praterleben from his student days had recently mutated into the anthem of the Berlin Six-Day Race and thus the Sportpalastwalzer: when Reinhold Franz Habisch alias Krücke whistled, the Nudeltopp boiled. But Translateur is more. He knows what flowers dream of, strolls leisurely through the big city, waltzes through life with verve - a charming representative of the silver era, which has not disappeared after all.
