O marvelous marble, O bonfire, O light we cannot see, O layers of identity, O smoke & ash, O lover, O breath, O nightmarish absurdity, O weeping cherry petal snow, O railroad thunder, O childhood laughter echoing, O sea level rising, O marvelous marble—do we come back into bodies again after we leave them? Do we retain any memory in another form, or do we simply evaporate? I asked the sea lions in the Galápagos, the mountains in Montana. From the airplane window, I asked the clouds over the Rhine. Tried to divine the patterns of dust on a bus window. A cardboard robot pushes a loaded shopping cart downtown, and waves. I light sandalwood on the home altar where we honor Mike & Teenie, Howard & Papa. This is an umbilical chord to all of life—the grieving seething earth, its marbled landscapes, its roiling oceans, its heart of fire, its coat of protective gases, everyone together, breathing here, spinning lost in space, from the maggot to the moon, all of it marvelous and worthy of awe.
