I was once told by my late father that music should sound ‘as smooth as pouring water from a jug’.
I’m reminded of his wise words on my first listen to this debut album “Ebb and Flow”. Maggie Carty seems to effortlessly play tunes on her banjo and sing her songs with total ease, captivating the listener to appreciate every ebb and tide of her playful notes! She approaches melody with innovative clarity and freshness. Her playing of well known traditional songs and tunes has a new dynamic, giving songs like ‘Far Away in Australia’ a new youthful lease of life.
I have known Maggie for a good while now and notice how she has developed and grown as an amazing young musician. She has learned from her father, the great John Carty, but has taken the tradition she has been brought up with, and given it a new interpretation which is what should happen for a music to survive and speak to a new generation.

Maggie has created a timeless debut album of great depth and colour. By choosing great material and embracing her new adopted land, she weaves the earthy tones of the Didgeridoo, an iconic instrument of Australia’s rightful Traditional Owners, to sit side by side with traditional Irish music. The music simply speaks for itself, as does this very talented, innovative musician.
