Martin Wind “Gravity Trio” – “September”: a musical statement about new beginnings, change, and gratitude. It has been 30 years since bassist Martin Wind packed his bags and moved from Northern Germany to New York—a step that would change his life in every respect. Today, he is one of the few German musicians to have established himself permanently in the melting pot of the Big Apple: a sought-after bassist, composer, and educator, valued for his warm, multifaceted sound and musicality.
With the trio “Gravity”—featuring Wind alongside saxophonist Peter Weniger and drummer Jonas Burgwinkel—he has created a format that truly lives up to its name. The debut album “Gravity” (2023, Laika Records) was already internationally acclaimed; the American *DownBeat Magazine* even drew comparisons to Sonny Rollins’ legendary *Way Out West*. Now comes the follow-up album, “September”—a production created in the United States that draws its emotional gravity from a deeply moving moment. On the morning of the first day of recording, Wind’s longtime mentor Jim McNeely passed away. “His death affected us all deeply,” Wind says, adding: “At the same time, I was enormously impressed by the dignity with which he journeyed through the final chapter of his life. Without words of regret, without bitterness, but with humor and great gratitude.” A spirit that also defined the “Celebrating Jim McNeely” concert in September, featuring New York jazz greats such as guitarist John Scofield.
“September” is not a melancholic autumn album, but a statement about new beginnings, transformation, and gratitude.

Scott Robinson (tenor saxophone*, clarinet)
