"Surgery and Pleasure" marks a significant milestone in the career of the Boston-based trio Vundabar, being their first release on the major independent label Loma Vista Recordings. The album's creation began during a period of personal rehabilitation for frontman Brandon Hagen, which was influenced by his use of a custom guitar prototype that reshaped his approach to the instrument. Musically, the record is an energetic synthesis of post-punk, math-rock, and surf guitar with grunge undertones. Unlike previous, more melancholic entries, this release is infused with themes of accepting inevitable change and existential searching, while maintaining the band's signature "sticky" melodies and sharp rhythmic shifts. The Deluxe version supplements the core material with tracks that expand the group's sonic palette toward denser and more aggressive production styles.
