Tectonic represents the culmination of Simon Berz’s fifteen-year exploration into the intersection of geology and avant-garde sound. Utilizing Icelandic basalt stones as primary instruments, Berz transforms their natural resonance through electronic manipulation, augmented by traditional percussion. The album synthesizes a decade and a half of global expeditions—spanning Indonesia, China, and the USA—integrating traditional gamelan elements and field recordings into a contemporary framework. The resulting body of work bridges club-driven dynamics, hip-hop rhythmic patterns, and ambient soundscapes, emphasizing the visceral connection between primordial natural materials and modern digital processing.
