Ibis: Band History and Profile
Ibis was a prominent Italian progressive rock band formed in 1973, emerging from the dramatic split of the legendary group New Trolls. Here are the key facts about the band:
The New Trolls Schism: The band was founded following a legal and creative dispute within New Trolls. Guitarist Nico Di Palo and keyboardist Maurizio Salvi left the original lineup to pursue a more complex, heavier musical direction, while their former bandmates moved toward a more commercial sound.
British Influence: Unlike many of their Italian contemporaries, Ibis aimed for the international market. They recruited British drummer Rick Parnell (formerly of Atomic Rooster), who wrote their English lyrics and brought a distinct UK hard-rock energy to their sound.
Stylistic Evolution: Though their career was brief, each album explored a different sonic landscape:
Canti d'innocenza, canti d'esperienza (1973) — Heavy symphonic prog.
Sun Supreme (1974) — Their most ambitious work, featuring space-rock influences similar to Yes.
Ibis (1975) — A return to Italian lyrics and a more straightforward hard-rock style.
The Spinal Tap Connection: Drummer Rick Parnell later gained worldwide fame for his role in the cult mockumentary "This Is Spinal Tap." He played the drummer Mick Shrimpton, famously known for spontaneously combusting on stage.
The Final Chapter: In 1975, after releasing their self-titled third album, Di Palo reconciled with Vittorio De Scalzi. This led to the dissolution of Ibis as the members eventually folded back into the reunited New Trolls lineup.
