"Dolce La Morte" is a monodrama by Suzanne Farrin for countertenor and ensemble, based on Michelangelo's love poetry inspired by a young Roman nobleman.
Tommaso de Cavalieri. Farrin's sensual writing style elegantly brings the aesthetics of the Italian Renaissance into the context of modern music.
Countertenor Eric Jurenas joined the International Contemporary Music Ensemble for a soulful performance.
In her work "Dolce la morte", Suzanne Farrin set to music Michelangelo's poems inspired by his relationship with Tommaso de Cavalieri, dedicated to
the joys and complexities of desire and spiritual fulfillment. These are really very powerful poems, and Farrin wrote for a countertenor and
a seven-instrument chamber ensemble. The music is complex and intriguing. The vocal line consists mainly of long, high-pitched legatos that are played differently with
pitch. The instrumental accompaniment is also often quite high-pitched and somewhat humming, with percussion inserts and places where the strings sound amazing.
It sounds like a different voice. It's fascinating and quite disturbing music, definitely one that you don't fully understand from the first listen, but which
you want to come back to again and again.
The performance by Eric Jurenas and the members of the International Contemporary Music Ensemble conducted by David Fulmer is distinguished by the highest skill and perfectly
recorded on disc. The recordings were made at Oktaven Audio Studio in Mount Vernon, New York, in February 2018 and feature crystal clear sound.
