Swell Maps were among the first punk bands to establish an independent label and are regarded as pioneers of alternative music, having influenced Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Stereolab, and Blur. Following the group's dissolution in 1980, original member Jowe Head assembled a new ten-piece collective for London performances in 2021 and 2022, culminating in the studio album C21, released on Tiny Global Productions. The record draws on material spanning from 1979 to the present — including previously unrecorded songs and a new version of the Soundtracks track "Jelly Babies" — while remaining true to the band's adventurous, experimental character.
