Johnny Sansone, Joe Krown, John Fohl - Sansone Krown & Fohl (2026)

Sansone, Krown & Fohl is the debut collaborative recording by three pillars of the New Orleans blues scene: harmonicist and vocalist Johnny Sansone, pianist Joe Krown, and guitarist John Fohl. The trio came together around 2000, playing traditional blues with Krown on piano and Sansone and Fohl sharing vocal duties. Recorded at Audiophile Studios in New Orleans, the album was originally released in 2004 on Sansone's own ShortStack Records label and reissued in 2026 on Sledgehammer Blues — a New York-based audiophile label dedicated to jazz and blues.
At its core, the music is swamp blues played by three New Orleans veterans. By the time of the recording, Sansone was already a seasoned master of Louisiana blues, blending Delta traditions with Cajun and Zydeco inflections. Fohl is a Grammy Award-winning guitarist and former Cherry Poppin' Daddies member who has collaborated with Dr. John, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and Bo Diddley. Krown, meanwhile, had established himself as a central figure on the city's keyboard scene, a perennial fixture at Jazz & Heritage Festival Piano Night.
The recording has an intimate, live-in-the-room quality — minimal arrangements, maximum interplay. The repertoire mixes originals steeped in Louisiana color ("Louisiana Blues," "Magazine St. Blues," "Crawfish Hole") with blues standards ("Frankie and Johnnie," "Pinetop's Boogie Woogie"). The Sledgehammer Blues reissue brings this period document back to wider audiences at a moment when all three musicians continue to perform together.
