Better known as Emjay, María José de la Torre Villaseñor is a Mexican trap artist from Guadalajara. Born in 1999, she only considered music as a hobby and was set to study architecture, when a chance encounter with a producer encouraged her to start writing songs. Signed by Warner Music in 2022, Emjay caused quite a stir in the male-dominated Mexican trap scene with her provocative tracks and defiant, empowering attitude. Her 2023 debut album, Las Morras También Hacen Tr444p ("lassies can also do trap"), only validated her budding credentials as a trailblazing Mexican female urbano artist, as well as an LGBT icon. Dozens of singles and collaborations followed, chief among these "Cuatro 44" with Gera MX, a 2024 viral hit. Preceded by "Boss" and "Vuelta Atrás," her more personal sophomore effort me estoy volviendo loca (2025) fused trap with hyperpop, Mexican pop, electro, and other genres.
