The musical heritage of Rajasthan has been profoundly shaped by the harsh environment of the Thar Desert and a turbulent history of invasions and imperial rule. A continuous struggle for survival, marked by droughts and socio-economic hardships, has forged a resilient national character reflected in the region's defiant and proud sonic expressions. This 2007–2008 compilation focuses on "street-level" folklore, capturing live performances by musicians across various castes in their natural surroundings. Diverging from formal ethnomusicology, the project prioritizes raw emotional power and authenticity, documenting the everyday cultural and religious life of the region through spontaneous improvisation and traditional storytelling.
