For the past two decades, Kany García has amassed a discography enviable to all who
operate in the world of Latin pop. Now on her 10th studio album, the stunning and
personal PUERTA ABIERTA, the Puerto Rican star pushes further into the intimacy and
emotionality of her preceding semi-eponymous GARCÍA. Reflecting the maturity of her
material, the conceptual framework behind this roughly half-hour effort presents as a
conversation with herself as a child.
Even without that premise, these songs rank among the finest in her catalog, with
moving ballads like “Lamento” and “Tierra Mía” sharing space with more rhythmically
driven pieces like “La Casita.” Her choice of collaborators reflects her esteemed status,
with Nathy Peluso on the fiery “Gatita” and Venezuela’s own Rawayana on the plenainspired “La Culpa.” Juan Luis Guerra brings a tropical touch to the meaningful duet
“Amor Bonito,” while Yuridia contributes a certain norteño flair to the heartbroken and
wide-eyed “La Mala Era Yo.”
