Antoine Dougbé was a Beninese composer and mystic, widely known as the "Devil’s Prime Minister" due to his high-ranking initiation into the Vodún cult. His work is uniquely defined by a synthesis of traditional Beninese ritual rhythms with Afro-Cuban influences and funk. Owing to spiritual prohibitions, Dougbé refrained from performing personally, instead realizing his masterpieces through collaboration with the legendary Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. Despite a difficult temperament and a relatively brief career, he remains a pivotal figure as one of West Africa’s most enigmatic and visionary architects of groove.
