His strategy? Impeccable pianism and an eclectic selection of works that frames Liszt not just as a virtuoso composer, but also an ardent admirer of Schubert and Mozart.

Before the era of copyright, quoting music was a widespread practice among composers, and few took as many liberties as Liszt when he reworked Schubert’s lieder into pianistic showpieces. The melodies of Mozart’s Don Giovanni received similar treatment. Wallick plays them all to perfection, a hint of ironic bravado included. The heart of the album is the mysterious, existential B minor sonata, which provides contemplative contrast. A feat!
