César Franck’s career was significantly shaped by the organ revival during the Second Empire. Between the late 1850s and 1890, he composed twelve monumental pieces that departed from the decorative style of his contemporaries to become undisputed masterpieces. To counter the inherent isolation of the organ repertoire, prominent early 20th-century pianists developed sophisticated transcriptions. These works effectively showcased Franck’s seamless fusion of piano and organ techniques. Furthermore, these transcriptions provided a new perspective on his compositions, highlighting the influential traces of composers such as Chopin, Liszt, and Debussy within his powerful and brilliant musical architecture.
