Cape Francis - Modern Dance (2026) [Hi-Res]

Modern Dance is the fifth full-length album from the New York-based Cape Francis project — the solo vehicle of singer-songwriter Kevin Olken Henthorn, released on Sleep Well Records, the Brooklyn indie label that has been his home since the 2017 debut. Long-time collaborator Ariel Loh returns as producer, mixer, and multi-instrumentalist.
The record was tracked in Atwater Village, Los Angeles, mixed in Ridgewood, New York, and mastered to Type II cassette on a Tascam Portastudio 414 — a deliberate analogue step that gives the album its warm, slightly abraded texture. Guests include saxophonist Barb Morrison on three tracks and harmonica player Ramona Apthorp on "The Start Line," while album art was provided by Mattson Tomlin.
Lyrically, Modern Dance picks up where Don't Let Your Heart Walk Away (2022) left off — anxiety, mental health, and the search for grounding — but approaches these themes with a more analytical, almost clinical remove. The title itself evokes automatism and social performance: the choreography we execute without examining why. Lead singles lay out the album's emotional terrain with precision: "The Start Line" captures the paralysis of overthinking at the threshold of action, while "Catapult" interrogates the seductive pull of an idealized future at the cost of the present moment. The production remains in Henthorn and Loh's established idiom — acoustic guitar as primary voice, restrained rhythm section, selective horn arrangements — but the cassette mastering adds a lo-fi intimacy that suits the introspective weight of the material.
