Clodagh Rodgers' self-titled debut album, released in 1969 on RCA Records (SF8033), emerged directly from her transformative collaboration with American songwriter and producer Kenny Young, who had spotted her on the BBC television programme Colour Me Pop in 1968. The partnership proved immediately fruitful: "Come Back and Shake Me," the first single from their work together, reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart and held its place for fourteen weeks, while also climbing to No. 2 in Ireland. Together with the follow-up "Goodnight Midnight" (UK No. 4), these two hits made Rodgers the best-selling female singles artist in Britain for the year.
The album's sound reflects Young's distinctive production sensibility — light orchestral arrangements, prominent brass and fuzz guitar, and a theatrical pop aesthetic that drew on his earlier work penning soul classics for The Drifters and Reparata and the Delrons. Alongside original material and hit singles, the record includes reinterpretations of "Under The Boardwalk" and "Captain Of Your Ship" — songs Young himself had written for other artists — as well as covers of the Moody Blues' "Tuesday Afternoon" and a pop reworking of "Get Back." The LP reached No. 27 on the UK Albums Chart, establishing Rodgers as a credible album artist in addition to her singles success. The current edition is released under Sony Music CG, which holds the rights to the former RCA/BMG catalogue.
