When your album’s called Clowns and the press shot has you leaning on a tree in lavender corduroys, you’re clearly not trying to out-cool The Rolling Stones. Thankfully, Ed Welch wasn’t.

Originally released in 1971, Clowns is a beautifully sincere soft-rock LP filled with orchestral flourishes, piano ballads, and gentle pop arrangements, all set to lyrics by American folk icon Tom Paxton. Produced by Michael de Albuquerque (ELO), it arrived at a time when glam, prog, and hard rock were ruling the charts—leaving Welch’s quietly crafted songs stranded somewhere between the West End and a lost Paul McCartney demo reel.

Lovingly remastered by Prof. Stoned and supported by Ed himself, this first-ever CD reissue adds four non-LP singles from 1971–72 and comes housed in a digipak with an 8-page booklet. It’s the overdue return of a soft-spoken album that finally has room to be heard.
