BARBED WIRE ROAD
The release of five new recordings from the Krayolas is cause for jubilation.
Barbed Wire Road — an expanded EP with five brand new tracks and a handful of remixed deep cuts from their catalog — is such a moment. Barbed Wire Road shows off yet another side of the Krayolas. One that came to the forefront rather spectacularly last year with “Under One Roof.”
In the summer of 2025, “Under One Roof” reached No. 15 on SiriusXM Outlaw Country. It appeared on the channel’s Most Played Songs ranking from August 2025 to October 2025.
The unplugged Americana folk anthem, which featured Grammy winner Flaco Jimenez on accordion, revealed the connection to their singer-songwriter heroes — Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and Steve Earle.
The 12 songs on Barbed Wire Road are bound together sonically, lyrically and thematically. They’re intended to support “Under One Roof” and enjoyed on a dreamy moonlight drive.
The new recordings — “Barbed Wire Road,” “Hurtin’ Me Baby,” “Bird Don’t Fly Away,” “Baby Be Mine” and “Epitaph Street” — are mostly acoustic and unplugged in nature. Voices are upfront and deadly clear.
Barbed Wire Road is wonderfully listenable thanks to the songwriting of Hector Saldana. Its title conjures the Brothers Saldana’s South Texas ranching roots, rough and rowdy relationship and origin story.
Hector Saldana sings lead on two of the new recordings, “Barbed Wire Road” and “Epitaph Street.” Younger brother David Saldana grabs the vocal spotlight on three new tracks: “Hurtin’ Me Baby,” “Bird Don’t Fly Away” and “Baby Be Mine.”
Flaco Jimenez isn’t the only Texas Tornado in the mix. Augie Meyers brings his magic box, too.
Augie Meyers adds a lovely elegance to “Doorway Darling,” playing piano and Vox Continental organ. On his piano accordion, he does his damndest to pay homage to Pet Sounds.
Along the way, he sneaks in some barrelhouse piano on “Goose Is Cooked (Yakety Song)” and takes it home on Vox combo organ on the Sir Douglas Quintet-inspired closing song “Exit Salida.”
A full-length album of all-new original songs by the Krayolas is expected in 2027.
