Carla Marcotulli and Marcello Tonolo - Legrand Romance (2026) [Hi-Res]

Legrand Romance is a collaborative work by Italian jazz vocalist Carla Marcotulli and pianist Marcello Tonolo, released in 2026 on the Venice-based label Caligola Records, which has specialised in Italian jazz since 1994. The album is a refined chamber tribute to French composer Michel Legrand (1932–2019) and the American lyricist duo Alan and Marilyn Bergman, whose decades-long partnership gave the standard repertoire such songs as You Must Believe in Spring, What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?, The Summer Knows and His Eyes, Her Eyes.
The programme is conceived as an intimate voice-and-piano dialogue, stripped of rhythm section and horns — a choice that foregrounds melodic line and poetic content over orchestral display. Marcotulli and Tonolo approach the material not as a string of standards but as a unified emotional cycle, where the "chiaroscuro flow of the melody" (the label's own phrasing) meets the imagery of the Bergmans' lyrics: existential melancholy, the elusiveness of time, and quiet hope. The duo effectively constructs a romance in the original sense of the word — a concentrated, lyrical reading of the song repertoire in which Tonolo's jazz phrasing and harmonic freedom support Marcotulli's chamber-scale expressiveness.
Carla Marcotulli teaches jazz voice at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome and serves as artistic director of the Jazz Idea festival; Marcello Tonolo is among Italy's most respected jazz pianists and educators, with a long collaborative history alongside Enrico Rava, Lee Konitz and Kenny Wheeler. The album received its world premiere on 17 May 2026 in the Sala Accademica of the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, closing the fifth edition of the Jazz Idea festival.
