Erotica is the fifth studio album by American singer Madonna, released on October 19, 1992, through Maverick and Sire Records. The album was released simultaneously with Madonna's first book, Sex, an album of nude photographs of the singer, and was her first release under Maverick, her own multimedia entertainment company. The album featured Shep Pettibone and André Betts, with whom she had worked on the 1990 albums Vogue and The Immaculate Collection. In mid-1991, Pettibone sent Madonna a three-track demo; she listened to the songs and liked them all. The two men then met in New York City to begin working on more music. The singer overwrote the melodies and lyrics over music that had been remixed by Pettibone. Erotica is known as a concept album about sex and romance during the HIV/AIDS era, with songs that address "heavy" topics such as S&M and homophobia. It also departed from the dance-oriented sound of Madonna's previous work, which incorporated elements of hip hop, house, techno, and new jack swing.
It was critically acclaimed upon its release, and was considered one of Madonna's most adventurous albums. However, some felt that the music was overshadowed by sexual themes. It was less successful commercially than Madonna's previous efforts; it peaked at number 2 on the US Billboard 200, becoming her first studio album not to chart at number one since her debut. Internationally, it peaked at number one in Australia, Finland, and France, and reached the top five in several countries, including Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Erotica was later certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and has sold over six million copies worldwide.
The album spawned six singles, including the title track and "Deeper and Deeper", which reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was supported by the "Girlie Show" tour, Madonna's fourth concert tour, which toured Europe, America, Australia and Asia in 1993.
Erotica was released in the United Kingdom on October 19, 1992, and in the United States on October 20, 1992, on Madonna's Maverick label. It was the singer's first release to carry a "Parental Advisory" label, due to the explicit content of tracks such as "Did You Do It?", which led to it being banned in several Asian countries, including China and Singapore. Two versions of Erotica were released: a clean 13-track version that omits the track "Did You Do It?", and the full 14-track version that carries the "Parental Advisory" label.
