"Thrillington" is an all-instrumental cover version of Paul and Linda McCartney's famous album Ram, released in April 1977 under the pseudonym Percy "Thrills" Thrillington. In reality, the project was conceived, produced, and entirely financed by Paul McCartney himself.
The album was recorded in June 1971 at London's Abbey Road Studios. McCartney had just released Ram and wanted to hear his songs reimagined with an orchestral jazz approach.
All orchestration and conducting were performed by Richard Hewson, who had previously worked on the Beatles' track "Long and Winding Road."
To drum up interest for the 1977 release, Paul and Linda launched a cryptic advertising campaign in British newspapers, including the Evening Standard. They ran ads along the lines of, "Has anyone seen Percy Thrillington?" or "Trillington Urgently Wanted."
McCartney himself only officially admitted to being the enigmatic Percy in 1989 at a press conference in Los Angeles.
The album embraces the aesthetics of easy listening, orchestral pop, swing, and lounge. The sessions featured renowned British musicians, including bassist Herbie Flowers and guitarist Vic Flick. Today, the original 1977 vinyl pressings are considered rare and valuable artifacts among Beatles collectors.
