A Cufflink-Wearing Guy is my fourth record, one that’s taken six years to take shape. I usually call the music I write indie pop as many of my formative influences, from The Smiths to Belle and Sebastian to The Lucksmiths, sit comfortably in that world. But this album wanders a little further afield. Alongside the jangly guitar pop and Lennon-esque piano ballads are rollicking country harmonies, Latin-tinged percussion, and even the occasional four-on-the-floor kick drum.
There are tongue-in-cheek songs about bad haircuts and the benefits of sleeping in, and more sentimental reflections on moving house and the disappearance of the honey bees. The songs sit somewhere between fiction and fact—never entirely one or the other. A little creative licence goes a long way. Then again, nothing resonates quite like lived experience.
Many people helped bring this record to life and I’m deeply grateful for their contributions. These songs have been part of my days, written in bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens, out walking, on the bus, on the back of parking tickets, and now they’re yours to make of what you will. If any of them resonate, keep you company or make you smile, that would be enough.
