Verdi wrote the opera Il Massnaderi, based on Schiller's play, for Her Majesty's Theatre, the Haymarket, in London. It premiered in 1847, and it was his first
commission from a non-Italian composer—an honor not bestowed upon his three great predecessors: Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti. It was his sixth opera
in four years, appearing just four months after Macbeth. The leading female role was sung by Jenny Lind, known as the "Swedish Nightingale,"
arguably the most famous soprano in the world at the time.
This recording, performed in March 2012 at the San Carlo in Naples, beautifully captures the essence of the great maestro's music. Nicola Luisotti's conducting is superb: from the heartfelt cello solo in the prelude to the introspective moments and angry confrontations, the chorus and orchestra
shine throughout. Luisotti is well aware that this opera is neither a truly "early" work like
"Oberto" or "Alzira," nor one as complex as, say, "Ball" or "Forza." It is a work rich in traditional forms, yet imbued with the energy
of a professional, not a brilliant newcomer.
