Pianists have long been in the shadow of the historically informed harpsichordists when it comes to Baroque music, having gradually abandoned the repertoires they used to play. But as of late, this trend seems to be reversing with a new, utterly uninhibited generation embracing Bach, Rameau, Couperin, and Domenico Scarlatti—going back in time even beyond the invention of the pianoforte by Cristofori, to perform music composed in the early years of the eighteenth century. Pianist Shani Diluka goes even further with her new album, Renaissance, devoted to Elizabethan and Italian Renaissance music. Admittedly, the even temperament of our modern pianos tends to homogenise the variable and unbalanced tunings of that distant era’s music, but Shani Diluka’s refined artistry preserves their complexity and emotional depth in a new light, resonating with her sensitivity. Let go, and you will drift through the eras, travelling from one to the next as if leafing through the pages of a history book. Thus, it feels entirely natural to pass from Byrd to Monteverdi, to encounter Purcell and Corelli, and to finally join two of the true keyboard masters—Scarlatti and Bach—whose styles, far removed from the Renaissance, bring us back to more familiar lands. Shani Diluka’s approach to appropriation, historically unorthodox though it may be, is perfectly sustained by her gift for expressive and melodic phrasing. © François Hudry/Qobuz
