"How to Cut Water" is a solo studio album by British saxophonist, producer, and engineer Marc Hadley, released in June 2026. This large-scale project was eight years in the making and serves as a profound tribute to the legacy of the Canterbury Scene, and in particular to the outstanding guitarist Phil Miller (In Cahoots, National Health, Hatfield and the North), who passed away in 2017.

The album's title ("How to Cut Water") is a metaphor for the attempt to give precise form to that which is inherently fluid and constantly elusive, whether it be musical improvisation or complex, unconventional rhythmic time signatures (such as Miller's beloved 5/4 time signature).

Genre-wise, the album is an hour-long journey, combining the discipline of jazz (Hadley trained in bebop at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama) with the free spirit of progressive rock. The sonic palette clearly features an oceanic and natural theme, inspired by the landscapes of West Cornwall, Celtic myths, and the atmosphere of the Atlantic.
