The album "Alegría y Ritmo" by the Venezuelan orchestra Los Megatones de Lucho, released in 1961 on the iconic Discos Velvet label, is a magnificent monument to the "golden era" of Caribbean tropical dance music.

Recorded under the baton of the brilliant pianist, arranger, and composer Luis "Lucho" Bermúdez, this LP is a perfect snapshot of Latin American club culture of the early 1960s, when orchestras competed in speed, grace, and ability to get the dance floor going.

By 1961, maestro Lucho Bermúdez was already a living legend in his native Colombia, but his work in Venezuela with Los Megatones de Lucho opened a new, commercially flawless chapter in his career. Venezuela at the time was a thriving music market, demanding a sophisticated yet irrepressibly danceable sound.

"Alegría y Ritmo" (which translates as "Joy and Rhythm") lives up to its name. It's a dense, vibrant, lively piece that fuses the sophistication of jazz big band with the primal energy of Afro-Caribbean drums.
