"Subrepticement" (1979) is the only, rare, and cult-favorite album by the French band Bedjabetch. Released on the private independent label A.W.A. Records (catalog number BB 006), the record was extremely limited in quantity, making the original vinyl a highly collectible item today.
Stylistically, their music is often compared to British fusion bands of the Canterbury variety (such as the late Soft Machine, Isotope, or National Health), as well as to their compatriots who infused jazz-rock with elements of French progressive rock and subtle, dark pulses in the vein of Magma (a Zeuhl genre). At the same time, some critics find a softness in their melodicism reminiscent of the instrumental periods of Camel.
Subrepticement (which translates from French as "Sneakily" or "Secretly") is a hidden gem of the French scene, perfect for lovers of vintage, uncluttered yet technical jazz-rock and rare European prog from the late seventies.
