The release of Long As You're Living (2024) and its follow-up I Still Rise marks the triumphant return of American jazz vocalist Lisa Rich to the music scene after a 33-year hiatus forced by severe health issues. Possessing a rich performance history, including past collaborations with Clare Fischer and recording compositions by Chick Corea, the singer revitalized her craft under the guidance of her mentor, Jay Clayton. Her new record, I Still Rise, completely omits drums to explore open musical space within an intimate quartet featuring pianist Marc Copland, double bassist Drew Gress, and trumpeter Dave Ballou. The tracklist balances original reflections and an Italian bossa nova with highly inventive interpretations of jazz standards by Paul Desmond, Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter, and Thelonious Monk, emphasizing improvisational freedom, expressive scat singing, and refined collective interplay.
