Cal Tjader - The Prophet (1968) {2026 Verve Vault Series}

San Francisco vibraphonist Cal Tjader was already well established as a leading figure in Latin jazz by the time this 1968 session arrived on Verve, though here his sound drifts into far more orchestrated and atmospheric territory. With Don Sebesky handling arrangements and Joao Donato contributing several compositions, the record balances breezy bossa nova movement with richly detailed jazz orchestration. 'Tema Teimoso' glides along on soft percussion and warm organ lines, then 'Warm Song' carries a hazy and almost cinematic elegance through Hubert Laws' fluid flute work. Elsewhere, 'The Loner' sinks into late-night introspection before 'Cal's Bluedoo' closes things out in blues-leaning fashion. A remarkably graceful set throughout.
