1621 was the year in which one of Europe’s most influential composers passed away—Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1561–1621), who inspired an entire generation of musicians with his knowledge and artistry. That same year, one of his students—Samuel Scheidt (1587–1654)—achieved a popular success with his *Ludi musici*.
